A kitchen timer for more than one thing

Your timers

Nothing on the clock

Run as many at once as you like — the pasta, the sauce and the garlic bread can each have their own.

How to use it

Give the timer a name, set the time and start it, or tap a preset. Start as many as you like: each has its own countdown, and you can pause one, add a minute, or start it again for the next batch. When a timer finishes it chimes and turns orange until you stop it.

Common kitchen timings

Starting points. Your hob, pan and ingredients will vary, so check early.

Soft-boiled egg

6–6½ min

Large egg, lowered into boiling water from the fridge

Jammy egg

7 min

Set white, sticky yolk

Hard-boiled egg

10 min

Then straight into cold water

Dried pasta

8–12 min

Check the packet; taste a minute early

Fresh pasta

2–3 min

It's done soon after it floats

White rice (absorption)

12 min + 10 rest

Lid on throughout

Green beans (blanch)

2–3 min

Then into iced water

Rest a steak

5 min

About half its cooking time

Rest a roast chicken

15–20 min

Loosely covered with foil

Bread dough, first proof

1–2 hr

Until doubled; slower in a cool kitchen

Why name your timers

A single beeping timer tells you something is ready. When three things are on the go, the useful question is which one. Naming each timer, and keeping them side by side, is how cook mode in Guided Kitchen works: "simmer for 20 minutes" in the method becomes a named timer you start with a tap, so you can stay on the step you're on.

Resting time counts too. Meat keeps cooking after it leaves the heat, and dough needs its proof; both are easier to respect with a timer that says what it's for.

Questions

Will the timer keep going if I close the tab?

It keeps counting: timers are saved in your browser, so reopening the page picks up where they are. It can only ring while the page is open, though, so keep the tab open for the alarm.

Can I get an alert when I'm in another tab?

Yes. Tap "Notify me when a timer ends" and allow notifications, and you'll get one when a timer finishes while you're elsewhere. The page title also shows the next countdown.

How many timers can I run at once?

As many as you need. Name each one ("Rice", "Eggs") so you know which is which when it goes off.
